Week 1 – Tips to Avoid Phishing Scams ✅
- Always Be Skeptical: Treat unsolicited emails, messages, and phone calls with caution, especially those with a sense of urgency or requesting personal information.
- Check Sender Details: Look for mismatched sender names and addresses, or an incorrect “From” address, as these are common red flags.
- Hover Over Links: Before clicking any link, move your mouse over it to see the actual URL. If the URL doesn’t match the link’s description or looks suspicious, do not click it.
- Contact Directly: If a message seems suspicious but could be legitimate, contact the sender directly using official, verified contact information found independently on their official website or app, rather than through the link or number provided in the message.
2. Protect Accounts and Devices
- Use Security Software: Keep your computer’s operating system, anti-virus software, and firewall updated with the latest security patches
-
Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Add an extra layer of security to your accounts, such as a verification code, to prevent unauthorized access even if your password is compromised.
-
Use Strong, Unique Passwords: Create strong, unique passwords for different accounts and avoid reusing them.
-
Monitor Accounts: Regularly check your bank and credit card statements for any unusual activity, such as unexpected charges or account changes
3. Practice Safe Internet Habits
- Avoid Sharing Personal Info: Never provide sensitive information (like passwords or financial details) in response to an unsolicited request, whether it’s online or over the phone.
- Use a Secure Connection: Avoid connecting to public Wi-Fi for sensitive transactions and consider using a reputable Virtual Private Network (VPN).
- Reduce Online Presence: Limit the amount of personal information, such as phone numbers or other contact details, that you post online.
- Educate Yourself: Stay informed about common phishing tactics and security best practices to recognize and avoid scams.
